Our Story

In the summer of 1994, a small group of people sat around a kitchen table and discussed how to create a safe and effective way for people to help their neighbors.  By developing a simple organization, where volunteers who want to help are matched with people who need a helping hand, everyone benefits.

Our Mission

VINE is redefining aging and promoting the wellbeing of aging adults through programming, services, and community engagement.

VINE Video

VINE serves older adults and their family caregivers, with a special emphasis on working with community members who seek to age to the max – caring for themselves and others, regardless of their years or means.

Testimonial

  • VINE is a vibrant gift to our community as a resource for active, experienced adults who want to be involved, and maintain their health and quality of life. As a member and volunteer, I have experienced the philosophy of lifelong learning, healthy choices, staying physically fit, providing a place where folks can socialize, play games and so much more. I am blessed to be able to give back to my community through my volunteer experience.

  • I am so deeply grateful for this place. This place makes such a difference in the community.

    Diane Dobitz
    VACC member since 2016
  • I knew I wanted to volunteer in the community, but didn’t know where. I believe The Lord led me to VINE because he knew the blessings I would receive every time I had an opportunity to work with the staff and recipients. There are a variety of activities available to give of your time and talent.

FAQ

WHERE DOES VINE GET ITS FUNDING?

VINE’s operating funds come from a variety of sources. We are supported by local contributions, program and rental income, fundraising events, proceeds from the VINE Home Thrift Store, the Greater Mankato United Way and grants.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO USE VINE SERVICES?

VINE asks people who benefit from our services to make regular contributions, as they are able, to assure that VINE has the resources it needs to help the community. We inform care receivers and their families of the actual cost of our services so that they can make an informed decision about contributions. Some of our services (Meals on Wheels, Chores) have set fees and other services depend on contributions. VINE works closely with county public health and accepts waiver payments to cover the cost of services for low income community members. For more information about costs, contact the VINE office at (507) 387-1666.

HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO GET HELP FROM VINE?

Serving those 65+is a priority to us. However, as resources permit, we assist younger people with disabilities and individuals and families who are encountering difficult life circumstances. VINE’s chore, caregiver support, nursing home transition, peer counseling and transportation programs receive partial funding from grants and contracts to help people aged 65 and older to remain living independently. VINE works closely with the staff at county human services and several managed care organizations to provide rides for their clients of all ages.

WILL VINE STILL HELP ME IF I MOVE INTO AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY OR NURSING HOME?

No. VINE’s services are intended to help people remain living independently in their own homes and to supplement the help that family and neighborhood caregivers can provide. When a person chooses to move into a facility, new types of caregivers and services become available to them and VINE’s volunteer caregiver role comes to an end.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARE RECEIVERS AND VACC MEMBERS?

Care receivers are the individuals who receive some sort of help from VINE. They may receive Hot Meals on Wheels, transportation or help with household chores. There is no initial fee to be a care receiver, but there are costs associated with the services received. When a person first calls and requests assistance, a member of VINE’s professional staff will make a “get acquainted” visit to the person’s home. This is a time to learn about specific needs and discuss how VINE can be helpful. A care receiver application is completed and the person requesting help is asked to provide their written permission for VINE to get involved. It is not necessary for a care receiver to become a VACC member, although we encourage everyone to enjoy the fun and fellowship offered at the Adult Community Center.
VINE Adult Community Center (VACC) members come to the VINE Adult Community Center to exercise, participate in programs, and socialize. Membership fees are based on the type of activities that people choose and, in most cases, health insurance incentives cover all or part of the monthly membership cost. Financial assistance is available on a sliding fee scale for people age 62+ with a demonstrated need, as determined by our guidelines. Call the VINE Business Office at (507) 387-1666 for further information.
