Humans have lived in and around the Yellowstone Valley for thousands of years. However, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill into law in 1872 establishing Yellowstone as the world’s first National Park. This act set aside thousands of acres to be preserved for the benefit of the American people. Learn a short history of various Tribal Nations that call Yellowstone home and why Congress and President Grant established the idea of a “National Park” in the 1870s.
