In 2023, VINE launched an Age-Friendly initiative with support from the MN Department of Human Services and Age-Friendly MN to help make Greater Mankato a more inclusive, livable community for older adults. Since then, we’ve worked closely with city leaders, healthcare providers, and community organizations to develop a plan that prioritizes social participation, respect and inclusion, and better communication for aging adults.
Through our community survey and focus groups we discovered many residents feel Greater Mankato is a good place to age, however challenges like isolation, lack of awareness of resources, and barriers for people with disabilities remain. By focusing on these areas first, we aim to build a stronger foundation for future efforts in housing, transportation, and outdoor spaces.
